10 Rounds with Mike Calhoun (Babes of MMA) – Interview

As a Twitter junkie I am always hammering the discover tab to find the next big thing on Twitter!  Thankfully, I believe I may have found that next thing everyone needs to go follow ASAP!  This next big thing is none other then Mike Calhoun’s @babesofmma!  Seriously, if you are not following The Babes you are not living and you might as well delete your Twitter account now.  Mike started this (no longer) hidden MMA gem few months ago and I cannot thank him enough for improving my timeline with his daily tweets, retweets and follow Fridays!

Anyway, Mike was so gracious this week to spend some time with me for a quick interview to spread the word on the @babesofmma in our “10 Rounds” series of interviews.  Side note, for those of you anti-Twitter freaks out there who are afraid to join the revolution don’t forget to go check out their website here.

Thanks again Mike for the time and MMAVictor fans please go follow @babesofmma!!!  Trust me, your timelines will thank you!

10 Rounds with Mike Calhoun (Babes of MMA) – Interview

MMAVictor Pete D:
Tell people who are unaware of the Babes who/what you are?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
Babes of MMA are dedicated to the beautiful women of MMA.  In our unique way we help promote and support female fighters, MMA ring girls and MMA models.

MMAVictor Pete D:
What made you start this next big hit?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
To be honest it was nothing that was planned. As the owner I was in between jobs at the time looking to try out some ventures on the internet and loving MMA gravitated to that direction. My first site was a starting point to explore but found it was not interactive enough, too automated and lacked something special, the ladies of MMA! Soon after Babes of MMA was born but still lacked a specific direction. Once we started meeting some of these amazing ladies and hit the social media world we knew something special was brewing.

MMAVictor Pete D:
When did you know you wanted to focus on MMA babes?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
Once we attended a few events, met some of the ladies and saw the lack of exposure they receive we knew this would be our focus and the rest is history.

MMAVictor Pete D:
Who is your favorite ring girl (regardless of the promotion?)

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
This question could get us in trouble…lol. Being friends and acquaintances with quite a few of them it’s so hard to pick a favorite. We are here to promote as many as possible.

MMAVictor Pete D:
Who are your favorite babes to follow on twitter?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
Just like the last question tough to call but you can check out all our follow Friday mentions most Friday’s on Twitter. This list is getting quite long but the ladies deserve the shout outs.

MMAVictor Pete D:
Which is your favorite photo that you have re-tweeted or posted to date?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
Wow, with close to 20k tweets that’s a tough question. Maybe we should ask our friends and fans which was their favorite.

MMAVictor Pete D:
Who are your favorite fighters right now?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
Assuming you are asking about female fighters? Again we know so many of them tough to call but really intrigued by the upcoming fight between Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey. This could turn out to be the biggest fight in WMMA history.

MMAVictor Pete D:
Do you have anything special in store for your fans in 2012?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
Yes, we are in the early planning stages of a fully revamped website which will still include the daily feature. Got a lot of great ideas and can’t wait to share them with the world.

MMAVictor Pete D:
What’s the future of The Babes empire?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
Things are always changing but hope to one day be the biggest and best sponsor of women fighters, MMA ring girls and MMA models. The next big project will be our new website, then focus on a new store and gear, and from there hope to expand our sponsorship to more of these amazing ladies.

MMAVictor Pete D:
Would you like to thank anyone or drop any shout outs?

Mike (Babes Of MMA:)
First we would like to thank Peter and the team at MMAVictor for taking an interest in us and doing this feature. Thanks to our team, family, friends, sponsored fighters, everyone who supports us and especially the ladies of MMA who make this all possible.

Thanks again for the time Mike, I promise the MMAVictor fans are going to be clamoring over your Twitter and website within minutes of this being posted.  Disclaimer, we are not liable for any of our MMAVictor members who may turn into Babes of MMA stalkers!

Pete’s MMA Training Corner

When I first started training Muay Thai I was always hesitant when being squared up against a female in the mixed group classes.   I know, what is the big deal, it is only a female right?  True, but when you first start training combat sports the last thing you want to do is worry about hitting a girl.  At least that was the last thing I wanted to worry about.  See, I grew up in an italian household where it was was frowned upon to hit girls.  Too bad when squaring up in these classes the italian household traditions were only in my head.

Seriously, I remember the first time my instructor Nate said “DiLo, get in there and square up.”  Of course, I shrugged with an overall look of disdain because I just couldn’t and wouldn’t.  There was simply no way I was going to throw leather, no matter what Nate said.  That was until the minute the bell rang and I got hit with two teeps and a right cross.  Talk about a rude awakening within 15 seconds.  It only got worse from there too as I blocked several more simliar slick combos.

After these first couple of one-way exchanges it didn’t take me long to realize I needed to throw my old traditions out the window and start throwing.  For the next 4 minutes I did just that and felt terrible afterwards.  Literally, so low that I didn’t even want to look at her afterwards.  Thankfully, she was a sport about the whole thing and I will never forget what she said to me on the way out that night.  She said, “DiLo, you better bring it next week cause otherwise I am gonna drop you.”  From that minute forward I never again worried about squaring up in that class.

Now, if you haven’t noticed already this Pete’s MMA Training Corners main focus was females in MMA.  A very perfect segway into one of the biggest fights in WMMA history this Saturday night.  Miesha Tate is throwing her Strikeforce bantamweight championship on the line against Ronda Rousey and I for one cannot wait for it.  No joke, after going through all I have gone through in my training career I truly respect WMMA and everything WMMA brings to the table.

Seriously, MMAVictor fans don’t be afraid of something different this weekend!  Go tune into Showtime and enjoy a great WMMA championship battle.  It also doesn’t hurt that Meisha Tate is almost Gina Carano hot!  Come on – I had to bring that up!
