UFC Tonight Scored A Touchdown – @LonghornsMMA Rebuttal

Normally, Ben and I steer away from posting the same thing, but after reading his piece on UFC Tonight I had to fight back.  For those who missed his viewpoint here is his original piece.  I simply couldn’t let Ben get away with the none-sense that he posted without throwing my two cents into the mix.

This past Tuesday the UFC and Fuel TV decided to wake up and humanize the UFC and a few fighters for a change.  For those who are unaware, the UFC Tonight show on Fuel TV is typically a news based show, but also steers in the direction of entertainment once-in-a-while.  This past Tuesday was the furthest direction possible and I LOVED IT!

Ariel Helwani, who works for MMAFighting and hosts UFC Tonight, has been waiting forever to do a pop-culture entertainment show with MMA fighters and he finally got his opportunity and I am going to say this again – I LOVED IT!  Finally, the UFC took some time (no PPV’s coming up for a while) and let fans enjoy the fighters in a different way.  Instead of being all-business and trying to sell fights between champions and lower division guys or talking about cancelled events they actually decided to humanize people a little bit.  They finally took some fighters out of their elements and gave the world a little US Weekly for a change.  Sure, not everyone wants Twilight with their UFC Tonight, but for once in your life – live a little!

Seriously, why does the UFC have to be all-business all-the-time?  Why does the UFC have to be all news all-the-time?  Why does the UFC have to be all about smashing faces all-the-time?  Shit, it is fucking Halloween week, god forbid the UFC swing the pendulum a little bit and showed that they and the fighters can have some fun!  No joke, people always bitch about how the UFC struggles to reach new fans, how they don’t know how to humanize fighters and how it seems like they never have any fun.  UFC Tonight finally did that for so many people and I applaud whomever thought up this idea.  Not to mention, this quiet time was the perfect spot for it.

Think about it this way Ben (and all the haters,) for once, we finally got to see how fixated on MMA UFC Champion Dominick Cruz really is, how badly Ken-Flo needs to eat a Five Guys double cheeseburger with bacon and spicy fries, how Evans is the UFC’s version of Jay-Z and Puff Daddy (or whatever his name is now) and how Bisping is one of the most charismatic individuals the UFC has ever had on its roster.  Seriously Ben, god forbid, for 22 minutes the UFC could actually show a funnier side to these cage-killers.

Lastly, if the UFC wants to grow they need to get the stick out of their ass and enjoy life a little bit.  Open these fighters up, let them sell themselves and grow this fucking sport.  You obviously can’t have 100 Ken-Flo’s or Michael Bisping’s but when you do have a few spend some time enjoying them!  Stop being all-business all-the-time and understand that even the MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL have some fun once-in-a-while!

Don’t believe me?  Just look at former NFL standout, Super Bowl winner and now TV personality Michael Strahan.   You wanna tell me he didn’t have any fun?

Lol, funny stuff, but I will never back down when there are guys like me trying to make money in the sport and then you have companies wasting money, time and board etc, to fly these fighters out and basically bash their own sport with this non-sense. My article got a lot of positive feedback from true fans and execs at fueltv, not the fake fans that boo featherweight fights.

Open your mind up and realize this sport is driven by NEW FANS – not hardcores. Hardcores may buy every PPV, but its the NEW FANS that push the revenue to get YOU PAID. You think the hardcores pushed the Sonnen/SIlva buy rate to over 1 million? Fuck no, it was the UFC being able to bring in NEW FANS! Instead of trying to carry the flag for the hardcores, realize this sport doesn’t grow without new people waking up and finding a way to be interested in MMA.

New fans and fake fans are different. The new fans are just haters with hard heads that refuse to learn the sport and with fuel tv giving them shit to eat,how are they ever going to know what good food taste like? Producing crap tv like that is just going to make it worse. This is mma, not General Hospital. Haters are making the sport and that’s sad. It was a very highly rated show not because they liked those fighters, its because they love to hate them and talk crap. I don’t talk shit,I produce facts
