MMA Weekend Recap: More Belfort TRT issues and Evan Dunham screwed by judges….AGAIN!

Alright MMA-Freak and MMAVictor fans, it’s that time again! Time to get you caught up on all or any mma news you might have missed this past weekend. Grab your morning coffee or your after work beverage and let’s get you all caught up.

This past weekend was another wild weekend in mma. We all witnessed Luke Rockhold get knocked out via a spinning wheel kick, but was it justified? Some speculate that Belfort’s TRT may of had something to do with it, others think that kick would of knocked him out either way. The fact of the matter is, Rockhold bit off more than he could chew, TRT or no TRT.

The big story to me is the Brazilian judges. This wasn’t the first time Evan Dunham was over looked by the judges, but this really has to stop in my opinion. Dunham pressured the whole fight, had octagon control, landed more sig. strikes, had more take-downs, and in my eyes won that fight. And if anything, he didn’t lose a unanimous. I think the meaning of a “unanimous decision” has lost all meaning.

UFC on FX 8: Belfort vs. Rockhold Results:

MAIN CARD (FX, 9 p.m. ET)

  • Vitor Belfort def. Luke Rockhold via knockout (strikes) – Round 1, 2:32
  • Ronaldo Souza def. Chris Camozzi via submission (arm-triangle choke) – Round 1, 3:37
  • Rafael dos Anjos def. Evan Dunham via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Rafael Natal def. Joao Zeferino via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

PRELIMINARY CARD (FUEL TV, 6 p.m. ET)

  • Nik Lentz def. Hacran Dias via unanimous decision (28-27, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Francisco Trinaldo def. Mike Rio via submission (arm-triangle choke) – Round 1, 3:08
  • Gleison Tibau def. John Cholish via submission (guillotine choke) – Round 2, 2:34
  • Paulo Thiago def. Michel Prazeres via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Yuri Alcantara def. Iliarde Santos via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 2:31
  • Fabio Maldonado def. Roger Hollett via unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28, 29-27)

Tiger’s Uncaged: See what my awesome co-host has in store this week!

Also on the show we will be talking to MFC’s first bantamweight winner from this past weekend, Tucson’s own Anthony Birchak.

Don’t miss out on another great show.

MFC 37′s Birchak and Benoit Lived Up To The Hype

When the MFC decided it was time to start a bantamweight division, they wasted no time on signing two of the scrappiest/non-UFC fighters there were available. As soon as the fight was set, both fighters wasted no time going to twitter to express how they felt about one another. The twitter wars were epic as both fighters would one up the other in a back and fourth verbal war. When the fight was moved to the main event just days before the event, the two would go at it even more excessively. The twitter battle lasted all the way up to the fight, and when it was time to stop talking and start fighting, both guys entered the ring and delivered one of the best fights I had ever seen. Birchak used everything in his arsenal to dispose of Benoit, but he just kept coming. He got out of some scary submission attempts, including a triangle choke that almost ended the fight in the second round. The fight was amazing and you can bet that when Birchak or Benoit fights again, that fans of MMA will be tuning in.

Final Thought:

Benoit looked impressive and has the heart of a lion, but he needs to drop down to flyweight. He was just the smaller fighter in there against Birchak. Benoit has a big future ahead of him, but it is at 125 lbs. Birchak on the other hand, just looks to get better and better and is a future star. I expect Birchak to receive a MFC title shot in his next fight. Expect him to be in the UFC by 2014 after he is done with his MFC contract.

Even After Floyd Mayweather Retires, Boxing Still Won’t Die

Boxing has been around forever and after watching Saturday’s fight, a lot of fans and spectators think that without Mayweather, boxing will die. I completely have to disagree. Boxing fans are the epitome of fight fans. With fans, a sport will never die. Now, I do agree without Mayweather that the boxing PPV buy rates will go down, but there are some good boxers still out there and a few names that could replace “Money” Mayweather in the future. Okay, maybe not replace him, but still sell tickets and PPV’s.

With “Money” making $32 million in that fight and boxing PPV’s still selling at 69.95, I don’t see how mma fans think the sport is dying. It always seems that the current mma fan or writer thinks that boxing is slowly going into the light. Well, I’m not a huge boxing fan anymore and am a mma writer, but I’m not stupid. I know it’s going to take a little more than Mayweather retiring for boxing to die. I personally don’t think it will ever officially die with all the up and coming talent coming up in the mix.

Canelo Alvarez is an undefeated Mexican professional boxer in the light middleweight division. He is also the current WBC, WBA, and Ring Magazine Light Middleweight Champion. He has mad potential and a pretty big following. He has 43 fights (42-0-1 draw with 31 KO’s) on his record and fans love to watch his active foot work and precise/aggressive striking.

Another boxer who draws a huge audience and fans love to watch, is Danny Garcia. Garcia is also undefeated with a record of 26-0 with 16 Knockouts and is the current Ring Magazine, WBC and WBA (Super) Light Welterweight Champion. Both fights with Érik Morales were awesome fights to watch, especially the last one. Garcia brings it every fight.

If all these potential stars weren’t enough, boxing fans have Adrian Bronner to fall back on once Mayweather hangs it up. “The Problem” has complied an impressive 26-0 record with 22 of those fights ending via KO. Bronner is the current WBC lightweight champion of the world and is currently rated as the number one lightweight in the world. He is also ranked #5 Pound For Pound by The Ring magazine. If Mayweather passes the torch to anyone, this is your guy. He comes to fight, punch your face in, and will sell tickets and PPV’s.

Final Thought:

I understand that there are different kinds of fights fans out there:

The ones that love boxing because they have been fans forever. Then you have your mma fan, and then the fan that is a fan of both. You also have the fan like me that loves any type of fighting whether is “fake” wrestling, boxing or mixed martial arts.

The problem with all these different types of fans is, that they think they know everything. If you don’t follow boxing, then you don’t know anything about boxing, if you don’t follow mma, the same goes for you and etc. MMA Fans always love speaking their minds about boxing and how it will eventually die out. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t see boxing being as popular as it ever was or even drawing in the new generation of fight fans. Boxing has been around forever and those avid fans will never give up on what made them a fight fan in the first place. Boxing will always be passed down from generation to generation, and with fighters still wanting to just keep it standing, boxing will always be around for them and the fans.

There is still a huge number of fans that follow boxing, and I guarantee they won’t let the sport they love just roll over and die. They will keep continuing to shell out thousands of dollars for tickets or 70′s of dollars for PPV’s. A fan is a fan, and you can’t just make someone stop loving something they admire. Sorry fans that only love mma and don’t understand boxing, but it still sells and isn’t going anywhere.

Akira Corassani Calls out Conor McGregor for UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 in Boston

Ever since Irish featherweight Conor McGregor dominated in his UFC debut, UFC President Dana White has said he wants McGregor to be part of the UFC on FOX Sports 1 1 card in Boston. Not only does him fighting on the card make sense, but now he has a opponent eyeing a match-up with him.

TUF 14 cast member Akira Corassani (2-0 UFC) has went to youtube and has started his campaign to fight the Irishman.

“Conor McGregor, I hereby challenge you to fight me on Aug. 17, 2013, on FOX Sports 1 at TD Garden,” Corassani said in the embedded video. He admires him as a fighter and his camp, but thinks the fight makes complete sense.

“I respect you, I respect your team, and I respect the Republic or Ireland,” Corassani said to McGregor. “But it’s time to do this.”

Corassani is coming off a split-decision victory over Andy Ogle and a unanimous-decision win over Robbie Peralta since his semifinal-round finish on “TUF 14.” Corassani has looked  improved since his TUF 14 stint, his anger has subsided and his striking looks crisp.

Meanwhile, former two-division Cage Warriors champ Conor McGregor made a huge impact in his UFC debut earning the “Knockout of the Night” bonus after stopping Marcus Brimage. The first round stoppage was the Irishman’s 9th straight win, and has stilled never been to a decision in his career.

As of Monday morning, McGregor had given no response via Twitter, and UFC officials have given no indication of whom he may fight at the summer event, but spectators do expect McGregor to be on the card.

Final Thought:

I think this is a perfect match-up for McGregor and that Corassani should keep his mouth shut. I respect Akira for stepping up and calling McGregor out, but even with his improvements, Akira isn’t in the same league as Conor. Besides Brimmage, this could be the hardest fight Conor has seen in his mma career. I see this fight being another stepping stone for the future champ in McGregor.

Another Silva will Prevent Sonnen’s Retirement

Before Chael Sonnen comes on UFC Tonight on Fuel TV and talks a big game about a potential retirement, let’s break this down.

Sonnen started his MMA career in 1997 (aged 19) and made his UFC debut (age 27) in a light heavyweight bout against former IFC Light Heavyweight Champion Renato Sobral at UFC 55 where Sonnen tapped to his nemesis triangle choke. Does anyone remember Sonnen’s first triangle choke loss? (answer at bottom)

A lot of fans don’t realize that Sonnen has been doing this for awhile and has fought top competition all over the world. In Sonnen’s second fight (middleweight debut), he ended Jason “Mayhem” Miller’s 5 fight winning streak and gave him his first loss.

Sonnen has always been a grinder and tough competitor. The always brush, slightly non-confrontational Sonnen became more aggressive and verbal after his dad passed away. The Sonnen that fought for the WEC, and even the Sonnen that made his UFC debut against Demain Maia is not the “American Gangster” that we all know today. After the Maia loss, Sonnen became more aggressive and motivated. He went on a 3 fight winning streak earning a title fight against Anderson Silva where he was seconds away from the biggest upset in UFC history. Sonnen has went 5-4 inside the UFC and has lost two straight title fights against Silva and Jones.

Sonnen sells fights, sells tickets and knows how to plant a seed for a fight. He told Joe Rogan in the post fight that he felt there wasn’t really anything left.

“I’m not going to be one of the guys who hangs around if he doesn’t have a road to the title,” Sonnen said in his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. “I believe that was my last opportunity.”

Sonnen loves to fight, loves to sell fights, and is a great commentator, but there is still one guy out there and it’s no secret Sonnen has always wanted to fight him. Hint, he mentioned his name this past weekend.

“I’m terrible,” Sonnen said. “I lost to (Jones and middleweight champion Anderson Silva). What are they going to do? Put me in with Wanderlei Silva? Who else am I supposed to beat around here?”

It was no accident that the ”The Ax Murderer’s” name came out of “The Peoples Champ’s” mouth. Sonnen doesn’t just mention names for no reason. I expect him to go on Fuel TV tonight and praise Jon Jones, promote a potential “super fight” between Silva/Jones, and officially call out Wanderlei Silva.

It’s no secret that these two don’t like each other. Sonnen has mocked Silva for sometime now and if he wants that fight, he will probably get it. Silva doesn’t back down from anything and I guarantee he wasn’t too happy about his name coming out of the verbal masters mouth. This fight could easily main event on Fuel TV or co-main event on Fox, and the fans would eat it up. Silva beat Stann for a reason, for us to see the Sonnen/Silva fight in all it’s glory. Silva only takes big fights, and I don’t see the fact that Sonnen is coming off two losses being a problem for Silva to accept this challenge.

Will Sonnen send out a challenge to Silva on UFC Tonight on Fuel TV 7 pm PT?

Answer: Sonnen’s first triangle choke loss?

We all know Sonnen’s kryptonite has always been the triangle choke. Sonnen has lost four fights by triangle, but his first one was against TUF 1 champion (before his was on the show) Forrest Griffin at IFC: Global Domination in 2003.

MMA Weekend Recap April 29th: Sergio Pettis lands fight, Sonnen to Retire? Jones breaks his own bone, plus more

Alright MMA-Freak and MMAVictor fans, it’s that time again! Time to get you caught up on all or any mma news you might have missed this past weekend. Grab your morning coffee or your after work beverage and let’s get you all caught up.

It was another great weekend of fights, and Jon Jones once again demonstrated that he is one of the best fighters in the world. The big question(s) after this weekend are:

Was the Jones/Sonnen fight stopped too early?

Is Jon Jones the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world?

Is a super fight between Jones and Silva on the horizon?

Will Chael Sonnen retire?

How long will Jones be out with his injured toe?

(Answers below)

Did Phil Davis take the easy way out? I have been asked this all weekend. And the answer is….. NO! Davis fought his fight and did exactly what he wanted to. Vinny Magalhaes only has BJJ and is very scary on the ground. Davis wasn’t going to wrestle Vinny and give him a chance to win the fight. If Vinny wants to progress in this sport, he needs to learn how to set up his takedowns with improved striking. Davis is a wrestler who has improved his striking. That’s what makes a mma fighter.

Dana White on Phil Davis TMZ report:”The guy’s in a custody battle for his child,” White said following this past weekend’s post-UFC 159 event. “Those are the kind of things that are going to happen when you’re in a custody battle. You’re never going to see a custody battle that’s sweet. It’s mudslinging. It’s bad.”

Jon Jones: Anderson Silva Is Still the Top Pound-for-Pound Fighter

Misc:

Dan Henderson thinks Jones-Sonnen stoppage was premature.

Answers:

Was the Jones/Sonnen fight stopped too early?

Not at all. Jones is a beast and was working over Sonnen. Great stoppage by the ref in my opinion. Sonnen has been done since his first loss to Silva.

Is Jon Jones the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world?

Absolutely! Jones is the epitome of a well-rounded mixed martial arts fighter. The fact that he took down Sonnen was shocking and brilliant. Jones can do it all, and if Silva can get took down by Sonnen, then Jones would have no problem with it either.

Is a super fight between Jones and Silva on the horizon?

I would of said yes right up until the time Jones looked down and noticed his fractured toe. Now that Jones will be on the sidelines for a little bit, it all depends on what the UFC wants to do. Jones said after the fight he wants to fight Gustafsson, but that fight doesn’t make sense right now. The fight with “DC” Cormier makes way more sense right now. And don’t forget, it all really depends on what happens between Silva vs. Weidman.

Will Chael Sonnen retire?

Probably. He has had a decent career, but just like Nick Diaz, if you refuse to progress and change your attack, then the evolved talent with dispose of you in the octagon. He has awesome talent behind the mic and should just stick with what he does best, and that’s talk and report about mma. No more fighting Chael. Always a big fan, but your time is done.

How long will Jones be out with his injured toe?

It looks worse than it is in my eyes. I have jacked up my toes my whole life being a skinny guy like “Bones.” A fracture is nothing to scoff at, but he is a tough dude with a great mentality. He should heal up in no time. I expect to see him back in there around October 2013.

MMA Weekend Recap: No Gilbert Melendez Rematch? Ben Henderson Greatest of All Time?

If Bendo would of lost, would he of still purposed to his girlfriend?

How did Gray Maynard and T.J. Grant get thrown into the mix all the sudden?

Should Josh Thompson get a title shot next instead of Maynard/Grant winner?

Has Nate Diaz lost his step…again?

Is Daniel Cormier too cocky because he is still undefeated?

Was Jordan Mein nervous?

Is Matt Brown title worthy?

With Duane Ludwig training Team Alpha Male, what does the future hold?

Is Myles Jury a top 10 fighter?

I felt so nervous. It’s almost like you want it so bad and you want to do so well, and then you just kind of lay an egg a little bit. I didn’t fight the fight I wanted to.”

Misc:

Final Thought:

Lightweight rematches have been a thing as of late and I don’t think this should be any different. Ben Henderson has won 7 fights in a row and hasn’t finished one of them. He has had close fights in his last three fights with two of them going to split decision. Bendo claims he wants to be one of the best in the world, but winning and fighting the way he does, he will never be in the same category as Anderson Silva or Jon Jones. Melendez did everything he could and even admitted taking his foot off the gas in the 3rd and 4th round. This doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve a rematch. Maynard and Grant are good opponents, but they both don’t deserve a title shot right now. I personally still want to see Henderson/Pettis II…..
